When it was a poorer country the political process could be seen as a sort of joke... almost harmless.
But now that they've got billions of dollars in oil and natural gas in the coffers and are leveraging their unique strategic position, the lack of democracy becomes a little more frightening.
The effect is most frightening for the citizens of Azerbaijan.
