Even now, people would rather throw their trash away anywhere than walk a few meters to actually deposit it in a rubbish bin.

Thankfully, we have such bins in Yerevan, but people still decide to chuck crap out of car windows or while walking on the streets. On the other hand, there is the issue of enforcement of the law, fines, and also garbage collection in the case of the environment.

Nevertheless, while enforcement is key as is garbage collection, the prevalent attitude in society is what Ani described on my blog as “me” instead of "us." This also includes immediate relatives and close friends — effective “clans.”

Go into any Armenian apartment and almost without exception (apart from those living in extreme poverty), homes are spotless.

Then look at how the same people litter outside the apartment or throw garbage on the streets or in the countryside. There’s no sense of citizenship or belonging and that too desperately needs to change.

In the U.K., for example, when there are no trash cans, people take away their rubbish to dispose of elsewhere. Here -- and I assume in Azerbaijan too -- most people simply don't care.Onnik Krikorianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08635856483546209785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7172429940118949100.post-41893592273135258692008-08-04T12:18:00.000-07:002008-08-04T12:18:00.000-07:00Eric,The same problem is in Armenia. The good website HetqOnline (Investigative Journalists of Armenia) did an article on trash last April.

Here is the link:
http://www.hetq.am/eng/society/7989/

Tourists are Confronted with Heaps of Trash

Only one out of the 67 communities in the Kotayk Marz has a garbage collection site as prescribed by the environmental laws ion the books...Anihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05443689500887100154noreply@blogger.com
